A ballad from 17th Century England, it was introduced to the United States and later described by Roud as the most widely collected song in the English language. Due to this, most English-speaking countries lay claim to it. Early versions record the opening line “In Scarlett Town” – an old nickname for Reading. Although first printed in 1836, there is a reference to it in the diary of Samuel Pepys, later a key naval reformer, where he details a performance at a New Year’s party.
