about

The first of these is an offshoot of another 19th Century sea shanty, “Come Down, You Bunch of Roses”, before resurfacing again in the Caribbean in the 1930s. It then appears in 1956 with A.L. Lloyd’s famous rendition: “Go Down, You Blood Red Roses”. We first heard it sung by our friend Harrie Hayward. Spanish Ladies is referenced in a diary from 1642, author unknown, but was not published until 1796 as: “a famous old naval song”. Sometimes it is attributed to the Napoleonic Wars, though it is more likely an amalgamation of various British naval conflicts. The distance from Ushant to Scilly is actually 38.3 leagues.
