about

Go By Sea, also known as “The Child’s Ballad” and “False Knight on the Road”, is an offshoot of another Scottish ballad named “The Elfin Knight”, during which an elf threatens to abduct a maiden unless she can perform a series of impossible tasks. In this version, however, the knight is merely trying to outwit the child; yet the child remains steadfast. Because of the fairly simplistic “riddle solving” nature of the verses, there are hundreds of verses that have been written for it. Due to this fact, there are many different versions of this Scottish ballad. It was originally collected by Cecil Sharp in 1916. There is also a Swedish variant of the song, which features a witch instead of a knight.

lyrics

"How will you go by sea?"
Said the knight on the road
"With a good boat under me"
Said the child as he stood

He stood as he stood and for better he said
I go by sea

"How will you go by land?"
Said the knight on the road
"With a good staff in my hand"
Said the child as he stood

He stood as he stood and for better he said
I go by land

"I think I hear a bell"
Said the knight on the road
"It's ringing you down to hell"
Said the child as he stood

He stood as he stood and for better he said
Down to hell

"How will you go by sea?"
Said the knight on the road
"With a good boat under me"
Said the child as he stood
