about

An old Jacobite Air that was collected by Lady John Scott in the 1830s, and based on two older tunes known as “Kind Robin Loves Me” and a broadside of unknown title from around Edinburgh. Folklore says that it was written by two Jacobite soldiers imprisoned in Carlisle in 1746; one escaped whilst the other was executed. Though there are many differing accounts of its origin, it first appeared in print in Scotland in 1876.
