about

A Scottish broadside with lyrics attributed to Matthew “Monk” Lewis, and originally put to a tune by a Tom Spiers, both around 1800. It is perhaps best known for featuring in Thomas Hardy’s “Far From the Madding Crowd” after it achieved popularity in England and Scotland. Ours was composed rather hastily before a show in about ten minutes, but its pleasant sound has gone on to become a regular staple of our live performances.
