about

I first heard this tune performed by John Spiers as a Welsh variant called “Gentlewoman”. The original, before its migration to Wales, was a Scottish tune named “Roslyn Castle”. We found these lyrics to go with it, which nobody else seems to have done before. Although sometimes wrongly attributed to James Oswald due to the publication of his 1736 collection, the tune appeared under a different name, “The House of Glams”, previously in an earlier collection. The lyrics were apparently written by a Richard Hewitt in 1764.
