about

This is an English ballad from Cheshire that has seen various arrangements through its history, including as a military marching song. It first appears in an 1832 catalogue by James Catnach, though it did not reach mainstream appeal until it was collected by Cecil Sharp and Frank Kidson, and when it later became the closing song of the National Folk Festival. Local stories in Cheshire base the song on the life of Thomas Fownes Smith, the reverend of Little Leigh Baptist Chapel. If you visit the chapel, you can find a plaque to his memory inside.
