Also known as “Bonny Farday” or “Babylon”, this tale of incestuous murder can be found all over Scandinavia. According to Francis Child, its original publication was in a series of manuscripts from the late 18th Century. Interestingly, it was also collected in 1932 in Kentucky by John Jacob Niles, in a slightly retouched version. I was messing around with Steve Knightley’s “Widecombe Fair” one afternoon before a show when, suddenly, the haunting two chord opening sequence was born. We took it from there, fitting it to some lyrics that Maddy had been arranging.
